Abuse

Abuse is a computer game created by a defunct company, Crack dot Com, in 1995. It is one of my favorite games of all time. The main programmer released the source code and the game is freely available online.

These files are back up for posterity. I purchased the full boxed version back in 1996 in middle school, took apart the game's Lisp code with no prior knowledge of the language, and created add-ons and games. Since it was so long ago, I can't support them.

ShootOut (8/14/1996)

This was my first game ever created: a shooting gallery game. A pretty fun case study, I must say. There are some secrets in there ... like the secret Dopefish level to the left.

Bash! (9/1/1996)

Take a hammer, hit a dude. Not quite GTA, but still bloody.

Deviator: Deadly Space (9/16/1996)

A space-style arcade shooter, with a custom background, one weapon type, one enemy ship type, and repetitive gameplay.

Abuse add-on level pack (July 1996)

This six-level add-on pack was submitted to the Crack dot Com level-editing contest (for $1,000!), but apparently no one purchased the game so I never got to see that money. I could have bought a souped-up 486-DX2 machine. Or some brand-spanking-new 2D games for Windows 95.

Add-ons

  • Carcass: This add-on leaves behind a bloody mess from the aliens. Originally written by Jonathan Clark, modified by me.
  • Next Level Loader: Helps to load the next level in a sequence of levels. Originally written by Jonathan Clark, edited by me.
  • Lotto numbers
  • Sound patch: This is for the version of Abuse (2.00) that was distributed by Origin only! The Origin version came with music, but the sound system (smart people) could only run on a specific MIDI card. I happened to find the same sound system in use by another game, so I extracted those files and implemented them into Abuse 2.00 so that I could hear the music.
