Fares to increase up to 5.5%, and the end of free transit transfers on Metrolink

More bad news for transit riders, particularly those riding Southern California's commuter rail provider Metrolink. Their website has the gory details:

"Metrolink is considering an average annual fare increase ranging from 3.5% to 5.5% in 2009 to offset anticipated increases in costs to operate commuter train service.   If approved by the Board, the new fares would go into effect on July 1, 2009."

Metrolink is also ending free transfers: "Metrolink one-way and round trip tickets would no longer include the transfer privilege for connections with EZ Transit Pass or TAP-enabled operators in Los Angeles County. Customers using one-way and round trip tickets would be required to pay the regular fare to use connecting transit services."

I suppose it was too good to last, but for riders (like me) who once in awhile need to use Metro Rail or other bus services, traveling by Metrolink can cost nearly 50% more. Spokker posts on The Transit Coalition: "For those who make four transfers on a round-trip ticket that would mean an increase of $5, in the form of a Metro day pass. For those who make two transfers it would be an extra $2.50. ... For my situation, Anaheim-Los Angeles, a round trip to/from work would now cost $19 on weekdays, and $15.50 on weekends, an increase of 35% and 47% respectively, not including the actual 3-5% fare increase they are also proposing."

Since 2007, Metrolink's fares have increased each year. Last year, it was due to rising fuel costs. Perhaps this year, it's due to the increased number of conductors Metrolink has placed in cabs as a response to the Chatsworth rail crash. I'd like to note that ironically, in the meantime, the 91 Express Lanes' fares have decreased.
